| Fun Fact: Jace found the Golden Rope on one of his scouting missions. The Golden Rope is the only one in Skyport and is very valuable. Though it starts out the size of a small string, it can expand to any length and hold any weight without breaking.

"Good intentions aren't enough, Cole. Remember the sky castles? How many of those scouts do you think intended to die? Here's a clue-none of them. How many survived? Only a few. Your intentions don't matter. All that matters is what you do."
-Jace to Cole, Rogue Knight
”Die bravely.”
-Jace to Cole, Sky Raiders
Jace is the unofficial senior scout for the Sky Raiders. He helps Cole, Mira, and Twitch on their journey throughout the Outskirts. He is about one year older than Cole. One of Jace's worst memories was the sky castle with the maze and the knife monster. This is the castle where he found his weapon, the golden rope.
History
At some point before the begin of Five Kingdoms, Jace was enslaved to the Sky Raiders and becomes a scout.
Sky Raiders
When Cole arrives, Jace becomes Cole's trainer on being a scout. He uses a special golden rope as his weapon and escape tool. He and Cole are initially rivals because of Jace's infatuation with Mira, seeing Cole as a threat to his relationship with her. However, by the end of the book they eventually work out their differences and become friends. He escapes into the Eastern Cloudwall with Mira, Cole, and Twitch when the Legionaires come to capture Mira. Declan makes him a free person after changing his mark, and he goes along with Mira, Cole and Twitch to battle Carnag, eventually being successful. At the end of the book, he joins Mira, Cole, and Twitch in setting off for Elloweer to find Mira’s other sister, Honor.
Rogue Knight
Jace traveled to Elloweer with his friends and becomes friends with Skye. He attacks the Rogue Knight when he took Mira, and failed. He blamed himself for letting Mira go. He helped rescue Dalton and gets along well with him. When the group went to Trillian the torivor's palace, he volunteered to go in and find Honor. Along with Mira and Cole, Jace confronted his worst memory in Trillian's contest. This memory is when Jace found his golden rope, but also when he had to fight against a knife monster alone. He was surprised to find out that the Rogue Knight was good. He got a wolf mask from Callista. He almost died in wolf form while fighting Morgassa.
Crystal Keepers
Jace is part of the group that heads to Zeropolis to find Constance Pemberton. He recieved a fake ID, which deems him as Hampton Boone. On the train into Zeropolis, he escapes from the nearest station when Joe is captured by guardsmen, since Joe ordered all the kids to do so. After being separated from everyone, he reunites with Cole at another part of the city. He meets Roulette, a Crystal Keeper, at a gaming hub, while she is under the alias of Luri. While meeting with the Unseen for the first time, the secret base is infiltrated, and he escapes with everyone else to an abandoned warehouse. Here, the group is given new identities, since their old ones were discovered by the government. While on a mission to rescue Joe, Jace is suddenly attacked, and after Cole frees him, is immediately separated from him. When Cole returns, he is among the select few who are allowed to hear about Cole's trip to Junction. He helps save all of Zeropolis from a rampaging supercomputer. At the end of the book, he is on his way to Necronum, along with Mira, Cole, Dalton, Hunter, and Joe.
Death Weavers
Jace arrives at a temple in Necronum, where Cole and Dalton talk to an echo named Yeardly, whom asks whether Jace has a crush on "Sally", aka Mira. Later on in the story, the group heads to the fallen prison Gamma Rue, in hopes of finding Mira's sister Destiny. There, Sando the echo tricks them into entering his trap, where he demands that Mira gives up their lifespark in order to release the rest of them. Jace immediately volunteers to keep Mira safe, as does Joe McFarland. Sando agrees to steal Joe's lifespark, but then goes back on his word by stealing Jace's as well. Unfortunately, that doesn't stop Sando for stealing Mira's as well, and the three are imprisoned as echoes in the spirit version of Necronum. While being held captive, Jace and Joe were separated from Mira, and we're taken to a different prison. After Cole found them with Thunder and the echo of Callista, Jace went with the group to save Mira and Destiny. Right after Mira was freed, Jace was the first person to run up and hug her fiercely, with the two sharing a moment of relief in seeing the other safe. Finally, when Jace returned to the real world with Mira and Joe, he woke up in his normal body in an Unseen rebellion safe house, where Hunter had kept their bodies safe and intact. It's presumed that he is on his way back to save Cole from the High King.
Time Jumpers
Sixth-grader Cole and the princesses Honor and Destiny are prisoners of Owandell, an adviser to the princesses’ father, King Stafford Pemberton. Decades ago, Owandell used dark magic called shapecraft to steal King Stafford’s five daughters’ magical powers and give them to the king himself. Cole has spent months helping the princesses regain their powers, which has weakened the king. Lately, Owandell has also decided to stop supporting the king and instead support Ramarro, an evil immortal being called a torivor. Cole and his friends imprisoned Ramarro in a realm called the Void, located in the kingdom of Creon. Cole has very interesting magical abilities, including the ability to awaken the dormant magic of other people and to amplify others’ powers, so Owandell offers to let Cole abandon the princesses’ cause and join him. Cole declines just as Royalist Enforcers from King Stafford attack Owandell’s castle. Cole and the princesses are taken to the First Castle in the capital city of Junction and brought to the king, who is deathly ill. King Stafford regrets his past actions, makes Cole his personal royal agent and gives him his royal seal, so he can speak with the king’s authority. At the First Castle, Queen Harmony tells Cole that her final daughter in exile, Princess Elegance, is hiding in the Iron Fort. The Iron Fort is a retirement home in Creon, the kingdom where time can be manipulated by magic users. Elegance is safe for the time being, and the queen’s current priority is finding Princess Miracle (Mira). She brings a Wayminder named Violet to help Cole find Mira. Cole hypercharges Violet’s power with his own, enabling her to open a wayport, a path through space which she and Cole step through. They find Mira’s and Cole’s friends Jace and Joe in a place called the Locked Shrine, then they all escape back to Junction. Queen Harmony tearfully greets Mira, whom she has not seen for many years. Before tackling his next adventures, Cole needs a proper weapon, so Violet opens up a wayport to the Sky Raiders in the kingdom of Sambria so that she, Cole and Jace can retrieve a new jumping sword for Cole. When Cole first left Arizona and arrived in the Five Kingdoms, he became the slave of the salvage team known as the Sky Raiders, where he originally met Jace and Mira. The Raiders salvage items from floating castles that drift through the sky. When Cole hears that one of the recent castles seemed to have information about Ramarro, he, Violet and Jace investigate. On the flying castle, a small army of statues attacks the kids and nearly defeats them, but Cole uses his magical powers to shatter all of the statues. A statue of Dandalus, the founder of the Outskirts, arrives to tell Cole to go to Shepherd’s Grove in Creon to find Lorenzo Debray, a former Grand Shaper of Creon who knows a lot about the Void where Ramarro is imprisoned. They teleport to Elloweer to recruit their old friend Twitch to help them defeat Ramarro, and then they travel to meet Queen Harmony at the First Castle. Twitch and Jace stay behind while Violet and Cole teleport to the Temple of the Still Water in Necronum to look for Cole’s old crush Jenna, who is working at the temple. Cole uses his royal seal to order the temple’s prelate to free Jenna. Jenna chooses to continue working in the temple, but now she’ll receive a salary and be able to come and go as she pleases. Cole, Mira, Violet, Jace and Twitch leave the First Castle and teleport to the Iron Fort in Creon to meet Elegance. When they meet her, they discover that Elegance was 18 when she magically stopped aging and went into hiding in Creon. Decades ago, she married her protector, Brogan, who continued aging and is now an elderly man. Mira tells Elegance that all of their other sisters have their powers back and that Elegance is the only one who is still powerless. Elegance is sympathetic to their mission but doesn’t want to leave her husband to help Cole and Mira fight Ramarro. Cole and Mira return to the First Castle without Elegance. They discover that Queen Harmony, King Stafford and the other princesses have vanished and that Cole and Mira are suspects in their kidnapping. Cole and his friends teleport back to Creon. Enforcers capture them and use a magically charged net to hold Cole so he can’t use his power to energize Mira’s or Violet’s power, which weakens their whole group and makes them vulnerable to attack. Cole uses his power to tear apart the net, and then he disables the magical abilities of the Enforcers and makes them surrender. Lorenzo Debray arrives and teleports the kids to his lair. Cole explains that they need to find a better prison for Ramarro before he escapes and dominates all of the Outskirts. Lorenzo says they need to visit the past to meet with Kendo Rattan and ask his advice. Lorenzo opens up a wayport to the past and they time-travel to the dedication of a famous Wayminding school in Creon to try to get Kendo’s attention. Cole meets Kendo, but they are distracted from their conversation by the arrival of a legendary monster called the Perennial Serpent. Cole and his friends attack the giant creature, but it bites Twitch, who then vanishes. The Perennial Serpent also disappears and Kendo says it and Twitch have traveled through time. The Perennial Serpent’s bite always makes its victims vanish, and no one has ever found their location. Kendo wants to learn more about Ramarro’s prison, so he sends the kids back to Lorenzo in the present and tells them to visit him again in the past after 20 years have elapsed for him. In 20 years, they find that he has developed no plan for strengthening the Void. Ramarro will eventually escape, and when he does, Kendo thinks their only option will be to lure Ramarro onto the Pilgrim Path, a theoretical portal to Earth, where his powers would be negated. He also mentions that the Perennial Serpent seems to be a product of wild shaping power on the loose — likely Elegance’s stolen magical powers, which need to be returned to her. Kendo sends the kids back to the present, where Lorenzo gives them a message saying that Kendo managed to take the Pilgrim Path to Earth and is now waiting for them in Miami. In Miami, they meet Kendo, who has forgotten the Outskirts and lost his powers completely. The only evidence he has of his former life is a series of journals he wrote to himself about the Outskirts. Lorenzo pulls the kids back to Creon and gives them three secret talismans made by the ancient Grand Shapers of Creon to protect the Outskirts. The talismans are drinkable potions, one which will send a person 100 years in the future, one which will restore youth, and one which grants a person the chance to explore a probable future by living for three days in an alternate timeline, then returning to the present. Cole drinks the third potion and begins living in the alternate timeline so he can test out ways to fight Ramarro. In the alternate timeline, Cole and his friends go to the Iron Fort and tell Elegance that her shaping power has been running wild as the Perennial Serpent. Elegance sends Cole to the Far North Cache, the place where Ramarro will automatically appear when he breaks free of the Void. In the Far North Cache, Ramarro appears before Cole and his friends as a monstrous 8-foot-tall man with white hair and serrated teeth. Cole fails to defeat Ramarro. He jumps back in time several days, having finished his exploration of the alternate timeline. He explains the events of the alternate timeline to Lorenzo and his friends and mentions that he can now sense other people’s nexus of power, the center of their magical ability. For their final attempt at defeating Ramarro, Mira and Jace go to the Iron Fort to make Elegance’s husband, Brogan, young again, and Cole and Violet go to ask for help from Trillian, the only other torivor besides Ramarro in the Outskirts. Trillian agrees to help them lure Ramarro onto the Pilgrim Path to Earth, where he will lose his power. So Ramarro won’t be able to read Cole’s mind and sense the trap they have planned for him, Trillian says he must hide Cole’s memories just before the battle. Violet and Cole then go to rescue Queen Harmony, Honor and Destiny from Owandell, and Destiny prophesies that Cole must find Dandalus. They go to the Temple of the Still Water in Necronum and find Jenna, Dalton and Hunter waiting. Jenna says that Dandalus, the founder of the Outskirts, appeared to her and told her that she was necessary for the upcoming fight against Ramarro and to bring Dandalus’ echo back from the land of the dead. Trillian erases Cole’s memories of the Pilgrim Path plan, then Cole, his friends, the princesses and Queen Harmony teleport to the Far North Cache. Ramarro materializes, free of the Void, and Owandell and the Perennial Serpent arrive to serve Ramarro. Cole drains the Perennial Serpent’s power and gives it back to Elegance, and then energizes his Jumping Sword so that it flies from his hand and stabs Owandell through the heart, killing him. Lorenzo arrives and offers Ramarro the chance to take the Pilgrim Path to Earth, but Ramarro sees through Cole’s false memories and realizes it is a trick. Jenna uses her power to summon Dandalus’ echo. Dandalus tells Cole to jump through a wayport and escape immediately. The wayport sends Cole to one of the flying castles in Sambria, and Ramarro follows him. Cole animates the statue warriors in the flying castle and makes them attack Ramarro. Dandalus tells Cole that the flying castle is designed to follow Cole’s commands and resist Ramarro’s, so it is the one location where Cole could potentially beat the torivor. They fight fiercely, and Cole manages to connect with Ramarro’s nexus, ripping into it with his magic. The flying castle floats into a cloud wall vortex, and Ramarro falls into the vortex. As Cole loses consciousness, he feels someone rescuing him from also being swallowed by the vortex. Cole wakes up in a castle in Sambria, and Mira tells him he’s been unconscious for three days. He has successfully defeated Ramarro. After three more weeks of preparation by the royal family, Cole, Hunter, Dalton, Jenna and every single child from Earth who has ever been taken to the Outskirts as a slave arrive at the Pilgrim Path, preparing to go home once and for all. King Stafford died when Elegance regained her power, leaving Queen Harmony to rule the Outskirts, aided by her daughters. They have abolished the slave trade and plan to rule fairly. Lorenzo tells Cole that once he returns to Earth, he will eventually lose his memories of the Outskirts. Cole says a warm goodbye to all of his magical friends and crosses over to his true home.
Personality
Jace is described to be extremely headstrong, stubborn, and brave. His loyalty to his friends has made him very protective, especially around Mira. Although he can be sarcastic and slightly controlling at times, it's also proven that he would go to the ends of the earth for those he cares about. Once they find Dalton, it is shown that Jace and Dalton have a good friendship, often pranking each other. However, there have been times where the two argue over some things. (But then again, it's not too hard to start a fight with Jace).
Appearance
Jace has dark hair and bronze skin. He is a few inches taller than Cole. He is normally seen with a teasing grin or determined scowl.
Relationships
Cole
When Cole first arrived at Skyport, Jace, who was senior scout, immediately disliked him because of his quick friendship with Mira. The main reason for this is because of Jace's crush on her. Eventually, however, the two make amends, and prove to become good friends and allies on their journey to defeat Carnag, and eventually their quest to free the Outskirts from the High King's reign.
Mira
When Jace first arrived at Skyport, he met Mira, and the two of them became very close friends. Over the years, Jace has developed a major crush on Mira, proven by his constant protectiveness over her. They do tend to fight over many things, such as Jace's quick temper or the correct way to solve a problem. However, they never stay mad at one another for long, and its shown that they work well together in many situations. It's suggested that Mira is oblivious to how much Jace likes her, even though there have been many hints throughout the series.
In Book 2, when the group makes their way to Elloweer, Jace tries to inconspicuously get Mira to himself by entering through the gates with her, away from Cole and Twitch. Later, it's revealed that Jace believes he doesn't have a chance with Mira, since she's an exiled princess; plus, he tells Cole that, "She's all (he) care(s) about." When she was captured by the Rogue Knight, he was devestated, blaming himself for Mira's kidnapping. Despite Cole's efforts, Jace was unhappy and wasn't truly the same until they find Mira again at a tournament the Rogue Knight was competing in. When he sees Mira across the arena, he says, "You're right! She looks......well." It's pretty obvious he was going to call her beautiful, but stopped himself in the effort, and failure, of seeming indifferent to finding her. After teaming up with the Rogue Knight, he asks whether he can be of any use in helping protect Mira while she travels to Trillian's castle. Even though Mira assures him that his attempt to save her was one of the bravest things anyone has ever done for her, he still claims to be, "...useless, but loyal."
When the group arrived at Trillian's castle, Jace volunteered to step onto the Red Road, in hopes of getting Trillian's attention. Once he did, he pretended that he was dying, then laughed in an effort to scare the group. Mira angrily calls him a jerk, showing how she was convinced he was dying simply because she worries for his well being. But right after he stepped onto the road, the doors to the castle opened, yet no one came out to greet them. Deciding it was an invitation to go in, Jace volunteered, to everyone's disagreement. Although Twitch offered to go in his place, Jace refused, saying that as he one who stepped on the path, he should be the one to go in. Mira desperately trying to stop him, pleads that going after Honor is her goal, and that he can't risk his freedom for her. But he calmly tells her that she's too valuable to allow inside, showing his love for her that he would risk his life for her. So he goes in, but not before turning and saluting to a worried Mira. Despite their differences, the two have a very strong friendship, going so far as to trying to take the other's place in dangerous situations. Most of the time, Jace wins because of Mira's importance to their mission, but she normally feels scared and worried when he does take her place.
Right after he disappeared into the gates, Mira immediately tries to go after him, but everyone else holds her back, while stressing her importance to the mission. And when Twitch jokes that Jace could've been vaporized, she glared at him, while probably becoming more worried than ever. When Jace returns to tell everyone that Trillian wants to meet Mira, she is kept from going (against her wishes) until Cole goes in first, and returns to bring her with him. Before that, Trillian requests that the boys bring Mira to him before allowing them to have a chance to save Honor. Jace initially refuses, trying to keep her safe, but finally Cole is forced to go retrieve her. After hearing how Trillian is basically keeping Jace hostage, she immediately reacts, and follows Cole inside. The three of them work to get her to win Trillian's contest of battling memories from the threesome's past, and are able to save Honor. In Mira's memory, Memory Tessa pointed to Jace and claimed that he would protect them, which could easily be based on how Mira truly feels about him.
In Book 3, Jace and Mira walked together on Gizmo Road, yet their conversation wasn't heard by Cole. However, their actions reminded Dalton of how Jace had a major crush on her. Cole saw Mira laugh and pat Jace on the arm, suggesting that he has the ability to make her happy, as they've been friends for a long time. He was unhappy when Mira had to go to the Unseen headquarters in Zeropolis with another male scout, partially in protectiveness. But it's implied that he's jealous that someone else got to spend time with Mira.
In Book 4, when Sando captured Mira he offered his life immediately. After Cole saved him and Joe from Ramaro's minions, Jace admits that since he's been separated from Her, his main priority was going after Mira. And when they were reunited after Mira was freed from her prison, he was the first person to run to her. They hugged and laughed, happy that the other was safe. Before leaving the spirit version of Necronum, the two promised to find Cole and save him from the High King.
In book 5, Mira hugs Jace after Twitch is bitten by the Perennial Serpent. Later, Cole goes into a hypothetical future by drinking a potion, although he isn’t sure if it worked or not. He tries to convince Jace to tell Mira about his feelings for her so that Cole can report back what she said, telling him to “live bravely,” but Jace still refuses. As Cole leaves the Outskirts, Jace promises to “keep an eye on Mira,” and Mira promises to “keep an eye” on him. It is unknown whether or not Jace ever revealed his feelings, and whether or not Jace and Mira are together. They presumably stay at least friends.
Twitch
Jace and Twitch were friends before Cole arrived at Skyport. They shared a room together along with two other scouts and Jace was the one who gave Twitch the nickname “Twitch” because he made twitching movements. Twitch went along with the group who started off on Mira's quest and when Jace fell, Twitch revealed his true form without hesitation to save him. They constantly risk their lives for each other, despite Jace constantly teasing Twitch and about his bug wings and making him blush. They spend lots of time together on the quest and become close friends.
